2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Change Follows Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a distinct game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After several months of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to continue observing the development of the game in the time to follow.
David

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Face the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, risk it all, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
The game does not have an confirmed launch window or supported systems, but players can look forward to further news as creation continues.
