The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
