Fierce Gales Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to remain inside as severe gales batter the region.

Severe gusts reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and forced agencies to cancel in excess of 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

These gusts are influencing the entire South Island and lower areas of the northern region, per the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced uncommon red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in key areas including Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been urged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Emergency Response

This outage appears to be affecting households predominantly in the South Island, though authorities say that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in various locations homes have lost their roofs, while trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being struck by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a powerful blast, in a moment that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Air travel to and from the metropolis have been cancelled because of the weather, whereas certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have announced a crisis declaration, to support disaster response efforts.

Work Stoppages During Harsh Conditions

These intense gusts on Thursday occur while tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are engaged in what has been termed a "major walkout", calling for improved salaries and workplace environments.

Yet the intense climate has forced them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Authorities have issued fire bans for concern about forest fires.
