Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
