Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
