Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
