Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
